How often do you see a lesson etched in bronze? This is The Lesson Sculpture. It stands here in Bethnal Green. Franta Belsky created it.

The Lesson Sculpture depicts a mother and child. The child takes its first steps. The mother guides her toddler. Her hands gently hold his arms.

In 1959, this sculpture was unveiled on a housing estate. It was part of a plan. The London County Council wanted to bring art to the East End. They set aside money each year. This money was for commissioning art. The art was then placed in public spaces. These included housing estates and schools.

Franta Belsky was born in Czechoslovakia. He fled to England in 1939. This was after the German invasion. He returned to Prague after the war. He learned many family members died in the Holocaust. In 1948, he fled again. This time, he escaped the communist takeover.

During the war, Belsky joined the Czech army. He participated in the evacuation at Dunkirk. Winston Churchill inspected the army five weeks later. Belsky vowed to sculpt Churchill one day. He fulfilled this promise in 1968.

The Lesson sculpture was first shown in 1957. It was at an open-air exhibition in Holland Park. The LCC acquired two cast concrete versions. One was installed here. This is the Avebury Housing Estate. The other went to the former Rosa Bassett School.

Belsky wanted to humanize the environment. He believed housing estates needed more than just basic amenities. He thought they needed art. Art could give them spirit.

“You have to humanise the environment” he said once. “A housing estate does not only need newspaper kiosks and bus-stop shelters but something that gives it spirit.”

The Lesson sculpture stands at the corner of Turin Street and Gossett Street. It is now a Grade II listed structure. Initially, locals had mixed feelings about The Lesson Sculpture. Some children immediately climbed on it. One woman predicted it wouldn’t last a month. However, it has become a much-loved landmark.

Another version of The Lesson stands in Abingdon. It is dedicated to Belsky’s wife. Her name was Margaret Belsky. She was a newspaper cartoonist.

Franta Belsky died in Abingdon in 2000. His legacy lives on through his sculptures. They bring art and humanity to public spaces. So, next time you pass The Lesson Sculpture, remember its history. Think about the artist’s journey and his vision for a more human environment.
