What is the first thing you picture when you think of London? Chances are, the Clock Tower springs to mind. This iconic landmark, often called Big Ben (though that’s actually the name of the largest bell inside), dominates the London skyline. The Clock Tower is an integral part of the Palace of Westminster. Did you know the Palace of Westminster houses the British government? You might know it better as the Houses of Parliament. Completed in 1859, the Clock Tower stands a majestic 96 meters tall. That makes it the third tallest clock tower in the world! Each of its four clock faces is 7 meters in diameter and made of 312 pieces of opalescent glass. Every five to six years, a daring team of cleaners abseil down the tower. They meticulously clean each piece of glass while the clock continues ticking! Imagine the pressure! Inside, the Great Bell, affectionately known as Big Ben, weighs over 13 tonnes. You can hear its distinctive chimes every 15 minutes, marking the quarter hours with a unique sequence of notes. The Clock Tower is a symbol of London and its enduring spirit.
