Whispers of history echo within the Church of Saint Benoit. This isn’t just any church. It’s a testament to time, a survivor of fires and empires. The Church of Saint Benoit stands as the oldest Catholic church still in use in Istanbul. Founded in 1427 by Benedictine monks from Genoa, its story begins within the ancient walls of Galata. Originally dedicated to the Virgin Mary and St. Benedict, it carries the marks of centuries past. The church’s location is steeped in history. It was built upon the ruins of a Byzantine church, near a large cistern whose remnants were still visible in the 16th century. Imagine those monks, building their new world amidst the echoes of the old. The Church of Saint Benoit has seen many changes. It served as the chapel for French ambassadors, a Jesuit possession, and finally, a Lazarist church. Fires ravaged the structure, but each time it rose from the ashes, transformed but not defeated. The church as you see it today is largely a product of a redesign following a major fire in 1865. Only the tower and the ground plan survived. Look closely at the columns and capitals of the atrium. You can see hints of its Byzantine past in the spolia, repurposed fragments of older structures woven into the new. Today, the Church of Saint Benoit shares its space with the Lycée Saint Benoit, a prestigious French language high school. The church is a living link to a vibrant past, a place where history whispers from every stone.
