A Parisian street named after a Cuban doctor. Can you believe it? This is Rue du Docteur Finlay. Right here in the 15th arrondissement. It’s a quiet street. Yet its history is rich and surprisingly international.

The Rue du Docteur Finlay wasn’t always called that. Initially a humble vicinal path in the old Grenelle commune. It was absorbed into Paris’s road network in 1863. It was then known as Rue de Chabrol. Later Rue des Usines. The name changed to honor Carlos J Finlay. A Cuban doctor. He made a groundbreaking discovery. He showed that yellow fever is spread by mosquitoes.

Finlay wasn’t just a Cuban doctor. His heritage was a fascinating mix of Scottish French and Irish. He worked in Havana. He studied in Philadelphia. This cosmopolitan background reflects the global nature of his work. His research had an immense global impact. He identified the mosquito as the vector. This led to improved public health measures worldwide.

But his story isn’t just about science. The street is lined with buildings. They whisper stories of their own. Number 1 boasts beautiful facade sculptures. Grapes roses rams’ heads and horned figures decorate it. Numbers 3-5 are striking. They’re a testament to early 20th-century architecture. The architects were Veber and Michau. They completed the buildings in 1907.

Number 13 holds a unique literary connection. The famous philosopher Michel Foucault lived here. He lived in a modern apartment from 1961 to 1970. And then there’s numbers 9-11. The building and its underground parking lot were featured in a film. The 1965 movie Pleins feux sur Stanislas used this location.

Rue du Docteur Finlay. It’s more than just a street. It’s a living testament to scientific achievement. A reminder of cultural exchange and the enduring legacy of a brilliant doctor. A legacy honored far from his birthplace. Right here in Paris.
