Could this elegant church truly have been a battleground? Here at St. Michel Church in Shiah, it’s hard to imagine. This is St. Michel, dedicated to the Archangel Michael, the powerful warrior of heaven. He’s second only to God, a protector against evil, his very name, Mikhael, meaning “Who is like God?”. St. Michel Church stands as a testament to the faith of the Lebanese people, a beacon of hope in a region marked by conflict. This church has seen its share of turmoil. During the Lebanese Civil War, from 1975 to 1990, St. Michel Church found itself on the front lines, a dividing line between warring factions. It became a symbol of resistance, guarded by its namesake, the celestial warrior. The church suffered immense damage. Mines, explosions, and flames left their mark. Yet, St. Michel Church persevered, much like the faith of the people it serves. The surrounding area has changed dramatically. Once a predominantly Christian area with gardens and orchards, it is now densely populated, with high-rise buildings and shantytowns. The demographics have shifted, with a large influx of Shiites. Yet, St. Michel Church remains, a symbol of resilience in a changing world. Restored after the war, and again after the destructive July War, the church stands tall. It features five arches at the entrance, corresponding windows, and a belfry. A small monument to the Virgin Mary graces the interior. Sadly, modern stained-glass windows, lacking sacred imagery, have replaced the original ones. It’s a loss for the church, and a reminder of how easily beauty can be replaced with the mediocre. St. Michel Church is more than just a building. It’s a symbol of faith, resilience, and hope. It’s a testament to the enduring spirit of the Lebanese people and a beacon of light in a world often shrouded in darkness. Remember St. Michel Church, a place where history and faith intertwine. It’s a story of survival, a story of Lebanon.
