Picture this. A majestic church stands tall. Its walls whisper tales of faith and community. This is Grace University Lutheran Church. It’s not just a building. It’s a living testament to the enduring spirit of Minneapolis.

Grace University Lutheran Church opened its doors in 1917. It served both neighborhood families and university students. Its construction was a monumental effort. A Swedish Lutheran congregation funded the project. They desired a place of worship near the University of Minnesota. The church’s location on the east bank made it easily accessible.

The story of Grace University Lutheran Church begins much earlier. In 1903 a small group of people formed Grace Evangelical English Lutheran Congregation. This was in the Seven Corners neighborhood. Many Lutheran churches identified themselves by nationality. Grace was different. It signified that this was an English-speaking church.

Interestingly the congregation wasn’t English in background. Its bilingual pastor held services in Swedish too. These services continued for 20 years. Another congregation called Sharon Church later merged with Grace in 1914. This was after much discussion and consideration. The Augustana Synod encouraged the merger. The aim was to create a stronger church. The new church would serve both the neighborhood and the university.

The merged congregation Grace Evangelical Lutheran Church needed a new building. So the synod provided land near the University. Chapman and Magney designed the stunning Gothic Revival building. Construction started in 1915. The first service was held on Christmas Eve 1916 in the basement. The finished church was dedicated in December 1917. Sadly the congregation ran short of funds for furnishings. Temporary lighting and seating were used until permanent ones could be afforded.

The church has seen significant changes. It has served generations of Minnesotans. It has witnessed the growth of the University of Minnesota. It survived the changing neighborhood. It has endured wars and social upheavals. Grace University Lutheran Church remains a beacon of faith. It continues to be a vital part of the Minneapolis community. Its history is one of resilience and enduring faith. This place stands as a reminder of the power of community. A testament to the strength of the human spirit. This is a church with a rich history and a bright future.
