A middle finger. That’s how the story of this building began for some. In February 2025 a protest unfolded outside. A man inside the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia made a gesture of defiance.

This is the Embassy of the Republic of Serbia in Budapest. It stands as a symbol of diplomatic ties between Serbia and Hungary. This unassuming building on Dozsa Gyorgy ut holds a significant place in history. It wasn’t always the Serbian Embassy.

Before its current role it housed the Yugoslavian Embassy. Then it became the Embassy of Serbia and Montenegro. It’s more than just a diplomatic office though. It’s a witness to pivotal moments. In 1956 Prime Minister Imre Nagy sought refuge within its walls. He’d led the anti-Soviet revolution. This building offered him temporary sanctuary. The revolution was crushed. Nagy was later arrested. He was deported to Romania and executed.

The Embassy overlooks Andrassy Avenue and Heroes’ Square. In 1989 a memorial service was held there. It was for the reburial of Nagy. A quarter of a million people attended. Fifty years later in 2006 a commemorative plaque was unveiled. It honors Nagy’s memory. The President of Serbia and the Prime Minister of Hungary participated. The plaque stands as a silent testament to a turbulent past. A shared history between these two nations.

The Embassy continues to be a focal point. In February 2025 a protest took place. Solidarity was shown with anti-corruption protests in Serbia. An event that sparked further controversy. The middle finger gesture. The ambassador refused to apologize. She also refused to identify the person who made the gesture.
