The Rue du Groupe Manouchian in Paris, is named after a group of 23 resistance fighters who fought against the Nazi occupation during World War II. Their stories are etched into the very fabric of the street. It starts at the Rue du Surmelin and runs all the way to the Avenue Gambetta. You can feel their courage pulsating in the air, as you walk down the street.

In 1943 this group, mostly immigrants and Jews, called themselves the FTP-MOI – Francs-Tireurs et Partisans – Main-d’œuvre Immigrée. They performed numerous acts of sabotage against the Nazis, including the assassination of Julius Ritter, the deputy in France to Fritz Sauckel, who was responsible for the mobilization and deportation of forced labor across occupied Europe. The group was betrayed by a fellow resistance fighter, who hoped to save his own skin. In February 1944, all 23 members were executed by firing squad at Fort Mont-Valérien.

But even in death, their story has had a profound impact on Paris. The street named in their honor is a reminder of their sacrifice and a testament to their heroism. It’s a historical landmark, a symbol of resistance, and a testament to the enduring power of courage and defiance.

You can see the street today, a bustling artery filled with life, just steps from the metro station Saint-Fargeau. It’s hard to imagine the tumultuous events that took place here, but this street bears witness to the bravery of the Groupe Manouchian. Their names are not forgotten. Their story continues to inspire generations of Parisians and visitors alike.
