The stadium hosted many significant events. The 1999 Arab Athletics Championships the 2000 Asian Cup and the 2009 Jeux de la Francophonie. Even a legendary Barcelona versus Real Madrid match was played here. But even this symbol of resilience wasn’t immune to the challenges facing Lebanon. The devastating 2020 Beirut explosion caused significant damage.
The stadium wasn’t just a venue for sports. In its post-explosion state it even served as a temporary storage facility for flour and wheat a poignant reflection of the times. Today though it stands as a testament to Lebanon’s indomitable spirit and the enduring power of sport. A reminder that even in the face of adversity hope can be reborn. Even within these walls.
