Imagine stepping back in time to a Dallas that was once farmland and vineyards. This is where our story begins at the Ahab Bowen Home.

The Ahab Bowen Home plaque marks a significant piece of Dallas history. It stands as a testament to a simpler time. This house provides a glimpse into the life of one of the area’s early settlers.

Ahab Bowen, born in Tennessee in 1807, moved to Dallas in 1861. He wasn’t just a newcomer. He became a vital part of the community. Bowen was a farmer and feed dealer who cultivated the land around here. At the time, this area was located outside the Dallas city limits.

In 1867, Bowen purchased this site. Around 1874, he built this house for his family. The Ahab Bowen Home is a rare example of a simple wood-frame farmhouse. These types of homes were once common in Dallas County in the late 19th century. Few remain today.

Bowen owned much of the land between Cedar Springs Road and McKinney Avenue. He had already been in this neighborhood for almost a quarter of a century. This was before the building next door, which now houses the S&D Oyster Co, even existed.

Ahab Bowen married Mary Lyon Easley on March 21, 1835. They married in Grainger County, Tennessee. Mary was the daughter of Warham Easley and Catherine Counts. Together, Ahab and Mary raised a large family. Their children included Sarah Catherine, John Warham, William Woodson and Elizabeth Caroline. Also, Henry Booker, Mary Jane, Rachel Adeline, and Arabelle Ambrozine.

Ahab Bowen passed away in 1900. He left behind a legacy of hard work and community contribution. The Ahab Bowen Home has undergone some changes since its construction. Alterations were made in 1900 and 1976. These changes have shaped its present appearance.

The Ahab Bowen Home is more than just an old house. It is a designated Dallas Landmark, a Registered Texas Historic Landmark and a State Historic Marker Program site. These designations recognize its historical significance and protect it for future generations.

Standing before the Ahab Bowen Home plaque, we connect with the past. We remember Ahab Bowen and his family. We honor their contributions to the development of Dallas. The Ahab Bowen Home serves as a reminder of Dallas’s agricultural roots. It also shows the transition from rural farmland to a thriving city.
