Clutching a weathered, hand-drawn map, we find ourselves at Tautari Stream. This seemingly unassuming waterway whispers tales of a man named Wiremu Watene Tautari. He navigated the currents of history as skillfully as he once steered his kauri-laden boats along the Waitematā Harbour. Tautari Stream serves as a quiet reminder of this remarkable man’s legacy. Born around 1834, young Wiremu witnessed a pivotal moment in Auckland’s history. As a boy, he stood among the Ngāti Whātua people in 1841. He saw them cede land to the Crown, land that would become the heart of Auckland. This act, intended to forge a bond of mutual benefit and protection, ultimately led to loss and displacement for the Ngāti Whātua. Wiremu Watene Tautari, however, was not one to be swept aside by the tides of change. He established himself as a shrewd merchant. His kauri timber business thrived, connecting the forests of the upper Waitematā with the bustling mills of Auckland. One of his key clients was David Goldie, owner of a mill at Commercial Bay and, significantly, the father of a young artist named Charles Frederick Goldie. Through this timber trade, a connection was forged between the merchant and the artist, a connection that would immortalize Tautari on canvas. Tautari became one of Goldie’s earliest Māori portrait subjects. These portraits, now treasured artifacts, capture not only Tautari’s likeness but also the dignity and resilience of a people facing immense challenges. Throughout his long life, which spanned almost a century, Tautari remained a staunch advocate for the rights and land of his people. He fought tirelessly to reclaim what had been lost, a testament to his unwavering commitment to his heritage. Tautari Stream, then, is more than just a waterway. It’s a tributary to the river of history. It reminds us of the intricate connections between commerce, art, and the enduring spirit of a people. It’s a whisper of Wiremu Watene Tautari’s name, carried on the breeze, echoing the strength and determination that shaped the story of Auckland.
