How about stepping back in time right here at Istanbul Technical University Macka Campus? This campus isn’t just any university building. It’s a place steeped in history. The Istanbul Technical University Macka Campus stands as a testament to Istanbul’s layered past.
Originally, this site was the Maçka Barracks. They were built for the Ottoman Army in 1834. The barracks were renovated in 1873. Imagine the soldiers who once occupied this space. Think of the drills they performed and the stories they shared within these walls.
Later, in the early 1860s, Simon and Sarkis Balyan added to the complex. These members of a famous imperial architecture family constructed an administration office. This office served the Maçka Artillery, adding another layer to the site’s military history.
The Maçka Artillery building itself is three stories high. After the Ottoman period, it was handed over to the Command of Gendarmerie. During the Republic era, the building served multiple purposes. It was a school of shipping, artillery, engineering, and gendarmerie.
In 1956, the Ministry of Education took control. The building was allocated to Istanbul Technical University. From then until 1977, it functioned as a Technical School. Since 1977, the building has housed the administration offices of the Faculty of Management.
Look around at the buildings containing classrooms. These were built in the early 1970s. They complement the older structures. They show the campus’s adaptation to modern educational needs.
Istanbul Technical University itself is one of Turkey’s leading universities. Its history stretches back to 1773. The Macka campus is located in the heart of Istanbul. It is very near the Bosphorus strait. This makes it easily accessible.
Giulio Mongeri also left his mark near the Istanbul Technical University Macka Campus. He designed the Italianate style Maçka Technical High School. It stands right across from Maçka Palas.
Today, the Istanbul Technical University Macka Campus combines historical significance with modern education. The Maçka Gondola connects Maçka with Taskısla near Taksim Square. It passes over Maçka Democracy Park.
As you stand here, consider the many lives that have passed through this space. From Ottoman soldiers to today’s students, the Istanbul Technical University Macka Campus connects different eras of Istanbul’s vibrant history. The university continues to contribute to Turkey’s future.
