Beneath the watchful gaze of the Warteberg, a story unfolds. The Philippinenhof-Warteberg in Kassel isn’t just a name on a map. It’s a blend of history, resilience, and breathtaking views. Established in 1778 as the Philippinenhof colony by Landgraf Friedrich II, this district started as a humble agricultural settlement. Imagine those early settlers toiling on the land, their lives intertwined with the rhythms of nature. By 1895, the population numbered only 228, residing in just 22 houses. The land wasn’t the most fertile, making life a constant challenge. Fast forward to the 20th century, and Philippinenhof-Warteberg experienced a transformation. Simple loam houses, built in the 1920s, gave way to new constructions between 1971 and 1973, providing 344 modern dwellings. The Warteberg itself became a haven for those seeking refuge. The Warteberg-Siedlung arose in the 1930s, followed by the GWG-Siedlung in 1935-36. The Adam-von-Trott-zu-Solz-Siedlung, built from 1958 to 1964, provided homes primarily for refugees from the Sudetenland and Poland. Within the Philippinenhof-Warteberg, you’ll find a memorial to Adam von Trott zu Solz, nestled among the trees. He was a member of the resistance against Nazi Germany, with ties to Kassel. He attended school here before being tragically executed in Berlin in 1944. Today, Philippinenhof-Warteberg is a vibrant residential area. It boasts a mix of privately owned homes, cooperative housing, and some high-rise buildings from the 1970s. The district caters to everyday needs and offers convenient access to public transport. From its humble beginnings as a small colony to its current status as a thriving community, Philippinenhof-Warteberg embodies a spirit of perseverance and growth. As you stand here, take a moment to appreciate the layers of history embedded within this unique Kassel district.
