A legacy etched in brick and mortar. That’s Unitec. This sprawling campus wasn’t always a hub of learning. Its grounds once housed the Whau Lunatic Asylum. Later it became Carrington Hospital. A chilling past transformed into a vibrant present. Unitec opened its doors in 1976. It began as the Carrington Technical Institute. The name evolved. It became Carrington Polytechnic in 1987. Finally it was christened Unitec Institute of Technology in 1994.

Unitec is more than just classrooms and labs. It’s the largest institute of technology in Auckland. It boasts a main campus in Mt Albert. This campus covers 55 hectares. There is also a smaller campus in Henderson. Unitec’s story is one of growth and adaptation. It aimed for university status in 1999. The government decision in 2005 was controversial. Unitec remained an Institute of Technology.

Unitec’s impact stretches beyond its campuses. It offers programs overseas. It has partnerships with organizations like the New Zealand Police. Students benefit from real-world learning. The School of Computing Science has an IBM internship program. This includes an IBM Center right here on campus. Unitec offers a wide range of courses. These range from certificates to postgraduate degrees. They cover many subjects. Students can explore fields such as architecture engineering and healthcare. The hands-on approach differs from traditional university models. The emphasis is on practical alongside theoretical learning.

In 2006 Unitec expanded again. The Waitakere Campus opened in Henderson. This is a joint venture with the former Waitakere City Council. It even includes the Waitakere Central Library. Unitec has faced financial challenges. In 2018 it reported significant deficits. This prompted government intervention. A sector-wide restructure followed in 2019. In 2023 Unitec introduced parking fees. This reflects the ongoing evolution of this institution.

Unitec’s journey reflects Auckland’s own vibrant growth. From a site with a haunting past to a modern educational powerhouse. Unitec stands as a testament to transformation and resilience. It is a place where learning and innovation thrive. Its future is as bright as its history is rich. This is Unitec. A place where learning takes shape.
