Established well before 1086, HM Treasury has evolved from a royal treasure chamber to the powerhouse it is today. Intriguingly, did you know that HM Treasury’s roots intertwine with the infamous South Sea Bubble? In 1711, the Treasury attempted to manage government debt through the South Sea Company. However, when the bubble burst in 1720, the financial fallout was so severe that the Chancellor of the Exchequer found himself imprisoned in the Tower of London!
