“A ghost town?” you might ask, looking around at the streets of Roxana. While it’s not exactly a ghost town, Roxana does hold a fascinating, if somewhat eerie, past. Nestled in southwest East Chicago, Roxana stands as a quiet testament to Indiana’s industrial past. This area, once bustling with the activity of the Roxana Petroleum Company, now holds a more tranquil presence. This very company, later absorbed by Shell Oil, established a massive refinery nearby in 1927. Imagine the roar of machinery and the sight of towering structures, a stark contrast to the peaceful Roxana Marsh we see today. This marsh, a haven for birds from moorhens to Hudsonian godwits, stands as a symbol of renewal. The land, once burdened with industrial waste, underwent a massive cleanup effort. Six hundred thousand cubic yards of contaminated sediment were removed, paving the way for nature to reclaim its place. Roxana serves as a reminder that even amidst the echoes of industry, nature’s resilience, much like the human spirit, can flourish.
