“God has called this church not to become history but to make history.” Those powerful words resonate deeply here at Saint Paul United Methodist Church. Saint Paul UMC stands as a testament to faith resilience and the enduring spirit of Dallas’s African American community.
Founded in 1873 Saint Paul UMC began humbly under a brush arbor. Enslaved people gathered here to worship. This original Freedman’s Town became a vibrant hub. Saint Paul planted the seeds for six other United Methodist churches. The church is the oldest African American Methodist Church in Dallas. It is the third oldest African American church founded in the Freedman’s Town neighborhood.
St. Paul is a pillar of strength for Dallas. It offers a spiritual sanctuary. It became a center for social and political change. Saint Paul became a hub for education and community development. The church gave the Black community identity dignity and hope for 150 years.
Look at the architecture. Construction of the current sanctuary began in 1913. It continued until 1927. Parishioners gave funds materials and even bricks. This Collegiate Gothic Revival style building stands as a rare surviving example of early 20th-century design. African American members contributed to its construction. Residents of the surrounding Freedman’s Town helped too. The church received a Dallas Landmark designation in 1982. It earned a place on the National Register of Historic Places in 2016.
