Amidst Jakarta’s bustling energy stands the Gereja Kristen Wesley Indonesia a testament to faith and resilience. This unassuming church on Jalan Pluit Mas IV holds a rich history. It began not in a grand building but in a small gathering. In mid-May 1983 seven individuals met for prayer. They were led by Pastor Ali O Angkasa. Their meetings were held in the home of Brother Natan in Teluk Gong.
The Gereja Kristen Wesley Indonesia’s story unfolds with humble beginnings. The initial prayer meetings eventually led to renting a shop house. This was in the SOKA area. It cost Rp 6 500 000 for two years. The group initially called themselves the Persekutuan Kristen Methodist Indonesia. Their first service and Sunday school were held on July 10 1983. 125 adults and 23 children attended. Pastor Angkasa delivered the first sermon. Pastor Chen Sui Kie translated it.
Formalizing their existence the church registered legally. This happened on August 25 1983. They registered with the Bimas Kristen DKI Department of Religion and the Department of Justice. Silas Hasan P J Judith and Lina K represented the church. Pastor S A Manalu served as advisor. A few months later the church officially became the Gereja Kristen Wesley Indonesia. This name change occurred on November 5 1983. Pastor P Siahaan oversaw this transition.
Growth brought new challenges. The initial worship space was only 45 square meters. It proved insufficient for the growing congregation. So the Gereja Kristen Wesley Indonesia embarked on a remarkable fundraising effort. One member donated their mother’s heirloom ring. Another walked through heavy rain to donate their three-year savings. This incredible generosity secured the purchase of two houses in Pluit Mas IV Blok C No 14 A-B. This is the church’s current location.
The dedication of the new church building took place on June 3 1984. Pastor S A Manalu cut the ribbon. Pastor Tjong Oen Tek opened the doors. Pastor P Siahaan signed the epigraph. Pastor Yosua Ong preached. Dr Peter Wongso offered words of encouragement. Markus Honggo expressed gratitude for the support.
