Lost in Jakarta’s sprawling landscape you might stumble upon Petukangan Utara. This unassuming village holds a captivating history. Petukangan Utara wasn’t always part of Jakarta. Originally it belonged to Ciledug in Tangerang. In 1974 a boundary shift changed everything. Petukangan Utara along with a piece of Kreo became part of Kebayoran Lama. A further shift occurred in 1990. Petukangan Utara joined the newly formed Pesanggrahan district.

The name Petukangan is intriguing. It derives from the word “tukang” meaning craftsman. In the 1960s many skilled workers lived here. They made furniture and window frames. They used local wood like jackfruit teak and mahogany. These craftsmen built houses including traditional Betawi homes. Their work defined the area’s identity. This skilled labor became the heart of Petukangan Utara.

Petukangan Utara boasts a rich cultural heritage. The village is home to Silat Beksi a unique martial art. It was introduced by Haji Godjalih in 1913. Four students Haji Hasbullah Kong Nur Kong Simin and Mandor Minggu helped spread it. These five masters are gone but their legacy lives on. Their graves remain well-maintained. Descendants keep the Betawi tradition alive. In 2015 Silat Beksi received recognition. The Indonesian Ministry of Education and Culture declared it an intangible cultural heritage of Jakarta. Petukangan Utara’s cultural heart beats strong.

The village’s streets tell another story. Many roads and alleys are named after local Betawi figures. This reflects the long Betawi presence here. Some newer roads in housing developments bear different names. They reflect the influence of developers and the passage of time. The names reveal layers of Petukangan Utara’s history. The present and the past coexist.

Petukangan Utara thrives with a mix of modern and traditional. It has a bustling main road Jalan Ciledug Raya. It connects Ciledug to Jakarta. This road sees constant heavy traffic. Congestion is common from 6 am to 10 pm. The single lane from the Adam Malik Transjakarta stop to the Kebayoran Lama Market Flyover causes major delays. Commuters from Ciledug and surrounding areas working in Jakarta are largely responsible for the congestion.

Yet despite the traffic Petukangan Utara offers a serene counterpoint. The village has three child-friendly parks. The RPTRA Bhineka stands out. It has a library a lactation room a PKK Mart a playground a futsal field and an amphitheater. The RPTRA also hosts regular activities. These include aerobics for the elderly three times a week and dance programs. These are provided by the South Jakarta Administration’s Tourism and Culture Department.

Beyond parks schools and places of worship add to Petukangan Utara’s character. It boasts the prestigious Budi Luhur University. Several senior high schools junior high schools and elementary schools call it home. The presence of these institutions strengthens the community’s fabric. Petukangan Utara is a vibrant blend of history tradition and modern life.

Petukangan Utara’s story is one of adaptation and resilience. It’s a testament to a community that preserves its cultural identity while embracing progress. It’s a journey through time reflecting the spirit of Jakarta. A place that quietly unfolds before you. A place you won’t soon forget.
