“A good man” they said of him. This unassuming granite boulder is the heart of the Dr-Zippel-Park. It’s more than just a rock. It’s a monument to Dr Hermann Zippel a beloved Travemünde physician.

The Dr-Zippel-Park itself is a small but charming park. It sits nestled within Travemünde a seaside resort in Lübeck. Many trees and green spaces offer respite and relaxation. This peaceful place hides a fascinating history.

Dr Zippel wasn’t just any doctor. Born in Saxony in 1864 he rose from humble beginnings. He pursued his medical studies in Leipzig. He eventually found his home in Travemünde. There he served as the town’s physician a role he took incredibly seriously. He is remembered for his selfless dedication to his patients. He often went without payment for the needy. Bundles of unpaid bills were discovered after his death.

But Dr Zippel’s impact extended far beyond medicine. He was a passionate musician and a leader in the Travemünde Liedertafel. This singing society played a huge role in the town’s cultural life. He was their choirmaster and later their honorary choirmaster for many years. He was also an active sportsman. He held leadership positions in Travemünde’s athletic clubs.

He was deeply involved in his community. Dr Zippel was a member of the church council. He belonged to charitable organizations and even led a theatre group. He was a dedicated member of the Travemünde citizenry. He even helped build a war memorial. His dedication was immense. His life was one of unwavering service.

The memorial stone wasn’t always here. It was placed in 1953. This marked the renaming of the Badegarten to the Dr-Zippel-Park. The Lübecker mayor himself took custody of the stone. This solidified the park’s legacy.

Even today three places in Travemünde remember Dr Zippel. A bronze bust resides in the Stadtschule Travemünde. Another relief sculpture graces the entrance to his former home. This small park his namesake stands as a testament to his life.

His selfless dedication to his community resonates even now. So when you visit this small park remember the man behind the name. Remember the “good man”. He dedicated his life to Travemünde. His memory lives on in this peaceful green space. The Dr Zippel-Park is a tribute to a life well-lived. A life of service and dedication to the community. A life truly worth remembering.
