Friedrich Kallmorgen born in Hamburg in 1856 died in Karlsruhe in 1924. He wasn’t just any artist. His father was an architect. His uncle was a painter. This early exposure shaped his life’s path.
Kallmorgen studied at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf. He learned from masters like Andreas Müller Ernst Deger and Eugen Dücker. He later studied at the Academy of Fine Arts Karlsruhe under Ernst Hildebrand and Hans Fredrik Gude. His travels were extensive. He explored Franconian Switzerland the Lüneburg Heath and the Harz Mountains. He even journeyed to France Belgium and Holland.
His artistic talent wasn’t limited to landscapes and cityscapes. During the 1890s he designed trading cards for the Stollwerck chocolate company. His series on Italian folksongs from 1899 was incredibly popular. A testament to his versatility.
His contributions extended beyond personal artistic achievements. Kallmorgen co-founded the Grötzinger artists’ colony in 1889. Two years later Grand Duke Frederick I of Baden appointed him a professor. This recognition solidified his place in the art world.
He taught landscape painting at the Berlin University of the Arts succeeding Eugen Bracht. His work earned him a gold medal at the Große Berliner Kunstausstellung in 1908. He continued to travel widely visiting Norway and Russia.
