Imagine if walls could talk and share secrets of music and merriment. That is what Tivoli Hallen could do if it could speak. This iconic building stands within the world-renowned Tivoli Gardens. Tivoli Hallen is more than just a concert venue. It is a place where memories have been made for generations.

Tivoli Gardens opened in 1843. It quickly became a beloved spot for locals and tourists. The first concert hall was part of the original design. It was expanded in 1873 and later became known as the Glass Hall. Music filled the air thanks to Hans Christian Lumbye. He was the music director and chief conductor. He composed nearly 700 pieces for the orchestra. Polkas valses and galops made him famous.

A new concert hall emerged in 1902. It was designed in a Moorish style by Knud Arne Petersen and Richard Bergmann. This hall offered a grand space for larger audiences to gather. It was a place where music and community came together.

Disaster struck during World War II. Nazi sympathizers destroyed much of Tivoli. The concert hall was among the buildings lost in the schalburgtage in 1944. Tivoli’s spirit could not be extinguished. A new, Modernist concert hall was built. Frits Schlegel and Hans Hansen designed it. It opened in 1956 with a seating capacity of 1660.

The Tivoli Hallen has seen many stars grace its stage. The Eurovision Song Contest was held here in 1964. Today, Tivoli Hallen hosts a wide range of performances. The Tivoli Symphony Orchestra performs here. Broadway musicals and jazz musicians also take the stage.

In 2005, a major renovation took place. The architectural firm 3XN led the project. The original 1950s style was restored. This included the red, blue, yellow and green color scheme. Visitor facilities were upgraded and expanded.

Before 2009, the Tivoli Concert Hall was home to the Tivoli Orchestra. Since then, the Copenhagen Philharmonic has been based elsewhere. However, the Tivoli Symphony Orchestra still performs here during the summer season.

Tivoli Hallen is also home to the Tivoli Aquarium. This is located below ground level. It adds another layer of attraction to this multifaceted venue. The hall is part of Copenhagen’s Cultural District. It stands alongside other important cultural sites.

The story of Tivoli Hallen is one of resilience and reinvention. It is a place where music history continues to be written. Take a moment to appreciate the beauty and history. Imagine the melodies that have filled this space. Tivoli Hallen remains a beacon of culture in Copenhagen.
