“Imagine a winged protector.” That’s how many Quiteños see the Virgen de El Panecillo. This iconic statue stands high above Quito. It watches over the city. Let me tell you its story.

The Virgen de El Panecillo is more than just a statue. It is a symbol of Quito. In the 1950s, city leaders decided this loaf-shaped hill needed something special. They wanted a statue that everyone in Quito could see. After much debate, they chose a replica of the Virgin of Quito. This original wooden sculpture was crafted by Bernardo de Legarda in 1734. The small statue was a treasure. It was a beloved piece of Quito’s art.

In 1969, the plan became official. Construction began in 1971. The base took three years to build. Volcanic stone was chosen to cover the concrete. The committee turned to Spanish sculptor Agustín de la Herrán Matorras for the statue. He created a massive version of the Virgin.

The sculptor designed a 98-foot-tall replica. It used 7400 pieces of aluminum. Each piece was carefully numbered. The statue was disassembled and shipped to Ecuador. Workers pieced it back together on the base.

The Virgen de El Panecillo was inaugurated in 1975. Including the base, it stands 135 feet tall. This makes it the tallest statue in Ecuador. It is among the highest in South America. It is taller than Christ the Redeemer in Brazil. The statue is also the tallest aluminum statue. It is the largest winged statue of the Virgin Mary in the world.

Besides the wings, the statue has other key elements. The Virgin stands on a globe. She treads on a snake. These are traditional symbols. But the wings are unique. Locals say she is the only Virgin Mary with angel-like wings.

El Panecillo means “the little bread loaf.” The hill was sacred to the Quechua people. They had a temple to the Sun god here. They called the hill Shungoloma. This means “hill of the heart.”

You can climb to viewing areas inside the base. On a clear day, the views are amazing. You can see the city spread out before you. The Virgen de El Panecillo has even appeared in a movie. It was featured in “Proof of Life” with Meg Ryan and Russell Crowe.

Today, the Virgen de El Panecillo is a major tourist destination. At night, special lights illuminate the statue. The municipality can change the colors for different events. The lights make the Virgin stand out even more. It is an icon of Quito. Miguel Salomón said the lights create shadows on the clouds. The Virgin’s face and crown cast their shadows. It is a fascinating sight.

The Virgen de El Panecillo stands as a beacon. It is a testament to art, faith and the spirit of Quito. It is a must-see landmark. Remember the story of its creation. Consider its symbolism. Most of all, enjoy the view.
