Did you know Busse Woods is actually officially named Ned Brown Preserve? It spans 3,558 acres. That makes it one of the largest and most diverse spots in the Forest Preserves of Cook County.
Busse Forest-South Grove 9 is one of many locations within Busse Woods. Here you can enjoy several activities and amenities. There is parking available for visitors. Also, there are accessible indoor bathrooms and portable bathrooms. These are open from April 1 to October 31. The opening depends on weather conditions.
You can access trails for hiking and walking in Busse Forest-South Grove 9. Bicycling is also a popular activity here. Don’t forget you must keep your dogs on a leash. Cross-country skiing is great during the winter months. Fishing and even ice fishing are permitted here. If you are keen, there are often volunteer opportunities available.
Busse Forest-South Grove 9 provides several picnic groves for gatherings. Accessible Grove 5 has a shelter. Grove 6 also has a shelter. Groves 7, 8, 9, 10, 13, 14, and 16 each accommodate 100 people. Groves 11 and 12 each have shelters and can hold up to 250 people. Grove 15 can accommodate 150 people.
The entire Busse Woods area has a rich history. Since 1925, elk have inhabited a 17-acre enclosed pasture. This is located on the east side of the preserve. The original elk came from Yellowstone National Park. Maintaining genetic diversity requires introducing new males every few years.
Busse Woods also includes the Busse Forest Nature Preserve. This preserve has earned National Natural Landmark status. This status comes from its unusual combination of flatwoods, upland forests, and marshes. Many trees here predate European settlement.
If you are interested in paddling, Busse Lake is part of Busse Woods. It was created in 1978 by damming natural waterways. Canoes, rowboats, and sailboats are allowed on the South Pool and main lake. You can rent boats from April through October.
