Have you ever wondered what secrets lie hidden behind the walls of Building 5 at Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital? Building 5 has witnessed a lot of history. This building, completed in 1976, wasn’t the first structure to grace this spot. Before Building 5, an older administration building and a tuberculosis building stood here. These were demolished to make way for the modern structure we see today. Building 5 originally housed 653 beds, a bustling emergency department, various clinics, and numerous wards. It represented a significant advancement in healthcare facilities for the time. For 40 years, Building 5 served the San Francisco community. It wasn’t until 2016, with the opening of the new Zuckerberg San Francisco General Hospital building, that Building 5’s role shifted. The new hospital, a state-of-the-art facility, took over inpatient services. While no longer housing patients, Building 5 continues to contribute to the hospital complex. Its legacy as a cornerstone of San Francisco’s medical history remains. The original buildings that occupied this site also hold interesting stories. The tuberculosis building housed a chest clinic where patients received treatment for up to five years. This speaks to the challenges of treating tuberculosis before modern antibiotics.
