A scandalous affair. That’s what this unassuming blue plaque whispers. This is the Ford Madox Ford Blue Plaque. It marks the spot where a literary scandal unfolded. At 80 Campden Hill Road in London.

The plaque itself is simple. Ceramic. It reads “FORD MADOX FORD 1873-1939 Novelist and Critic lived here”. Simple words. A big story.

Ford Madox Ford wasn’t always Ford Madox Ford. Born Ford Hermann Hueffer. He later adopted “Madox” to honor his grandfather. Ford Madox Brown the pre-Raphaelite painter. He changed his surname to Ford in 1919.

This house was once known as South Lodge. An unpretentious semi-detached villa. Here Ford lived with his lover Violet Hunt. A shocking move. His wife refused a divorce. The scandal rocked Kensington.

Their affair began around 1913. Ford was a paying guest at South Lodge. Violet Hunt a long-time resident. Their relationship ended by August 1915. Ford left to join the army.

But not before writing The Good Soldier. One of his most famous works. He and Violet held literary salons here. Famous guests included Ezra Pound Wyndham Lewis and DH Lawrence. A vibrant hub of creativity.

Ford’s presence lingered even after he left. His belongings remained in South Lodge until after Violet’s death. A friend noted he still dominated the house. A testament to his impact. A legacy etched in this blue plaque. A reminder of scandal. A reminder of genius. This is the Ford Madox Ford Blue Plaque. A small piece of a large story.
