“A street named after a sculptor? How intriguing” you might think as we stand here on Rue Émile Boisseau. The life of Émile Boisseau, a renowned 19th-century French sculptor, is deeply intertwined with the grand avenues and squares of Paris. This street, though modest in itself, carries his legacy. Born in 1842, Boisseau’s journey began far from the grandeur of Paris, in the town of Varzy. He started his artistic career in Bourges, restoring diocesan buildings. He eventually found his way to the prestigious École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. There, he honed his craft under the tutelage of masters like Auguste Dumont and Jean-Marie Bonnassieux. Boisseau’s talent propelled him to exhibit his work at the Parisian Salon from 1868. One of his notable creations, a statue of the playwright Beaumarchais, graces the facade of the Hôtel de Ville in Paris. Imagine the bustling city officials passing beneath his creation every day. Another of Boisseau’s works, a moving marble group entitled “Défense du foyer” (“Defense of the Home”), found a home in the square du Champ-de-Mars. This powerful piece, acquired by the City of Paris itself, showcases Boisseau’s mastery of emotion and form. Though he achieved fame in Paris, Émile Boisseau never forgot his roots. He became the director of the Musée d’Art et d’Histoire Romain Rolland in Clamecy and generously donated several of his sculptures to the institution. Boisseau’s legacy extends beyond his sculptures. He was a champion of artists’ rights, serving as the Vice-President of the Société des Artistes Français and President of the Syndicat de la Propriété Artistique. His life serves as a reminder that behind every street name, every plaque, and every monument lies a story waiting to be discovered.
