In the heart of Marseille, tucked away in the 7th arrondissement, lies Rue Chateaubriand. This street, steeped in history and literary significance, stretches for 446 meters, a quiet pathway in the bustling city. Rue Chateaubriand isn’t just a street; it’s a tribute to one of France’s greatest literary figures, François-René de Chateaubriand. This celebrated writer and diplomat, a key figure in the Romantic movement, lends his name to this charming Marseille street. The street officially became part of Marseille’s road network in 1860. A piece of land, generously donated to the city by the Widow Debrieu in 1897, contributed to the street’s development. As you walk along Rue Chateaubriand, imagine the sounds of a bygone era. During the 1930s, the melodic strains of violins and mechanical pianos drifted from number 9. Here, Mr. Gilardinghi, originally from Piedmont, ran a workshop. He crafted these instruments, their music produced by hammers striking nails on a rotating wooden cylinder. Sadly, the advent of powerful pick-ups, eclipsing phonographs and mechanical pianos, brought an end to this unique industry. Further down, towards the southern end of Rue Chateaubriand, stood the workshop of Guy and Naddeï, shipwrights who plied their trade for over a century in the Vallon des Auffes. Their craftsmanship, passed down through generations, echoes the enduring spirit of this historic street. Today, at number 46, you’ll find the École Primaire Publique Chateaubriand. The laughter of children fills the air, a vibrant counterpoint to the street’s quiet charm. Rue Chateaubriand embodies the rich tapestry of Marseille, weaving together literary heritage, industrial echoes, and the enduring spirit of its people.
