Now picture this. It’s Christmas Eve 2023. The church is filled with warmth and anticipation. The choir begins to sing. Leading them is Desmon Hutapea. He is a beloved conductor. He is 57 years old. Desmon conducts the choir with passion. The song is Glory Glory Hallelujah.
Suddenly in the last minutes of the song something unexpected happens. Desmon collapses. The congregation rushes to his aid. Some members are doctors and nurses. They administer first aid. He is still breathing. The church members quickly take him to Kartika Husada Hospital. He is admitted to the ICU.
Despite the medical team’s best efforts Desmon passes away. The cause of death is believed to be a heart attack. He had received treatment a few months prior. His passing leaves a deep void in the HKBP Jatiasih community.
Bernando Hutahaean is the church secretary. He said that Desmon may have been overworked. JB Siahaan is a church elder. He recounts that Desmon collapsed near the end of the nine-minute song.
