The Martin opened its doors in 2018. Since then, it has showcased emerging artists, with a focus on women, non-binary, queer, and BIPOC individuals. The Martin shares a unique connection with Split-Rail, a neighboring restaurant, and Dorothy, a 70s-inspired cocktail lounge in the basement. All three establishments are owned and operated by partners Whitney LaMora and Chef Zoe Schor. This creates a unique flow, allowing visitors to enjoy dinner, experience an art exhibition, and cap it off with a cocktail, all within the same building. The Martin – Gallery + Event Space isn’t afraid to experiment. One example is a past exhibition titled “SUBURBAN NOSTALGIA”. This show was inspired by Split-Rail’s pre-fixe menu for Chicago Restaurant Week. The menu featured dishes inspired by popular suburban restaurants. The exhibition echoed this theme, showcasing over thirty works by sixteen artists. Thirteen of these artists were based in Chicago. The art ranged from collages and weavings to playful nods to childhood toys and a diverse collection of photography. The Martin – Gallery + Event Space emphasizes accessibility and a welcoming atmosphere. Curator Whitney LaMora believes in making art approachable and inviting. The gallery hosts various events, including a weekly Makers Marketplace and a monthly queer open mic night called Fruit Salad. The Makers Marketplace showcases local artisans while Split-Rail serves brunch next door. Fruit Salad, a celebration of Chicago’s LGBQTIA+ community, has grown so popular that it’s now held in the larger space of Dorothy. The Martin also offers a unique financing option for artwork over $300, aiming to encourage young collectors. LaMora believes in building trust with her audience, offering an environment where people feel comfortable exploring art and asking questions. She wants The Martin to be a fun, quirky space that sparks conversation and leaves a lasting impression.
