Originally known as Tottenham Mosque Masjid Ayesha stands as a beacon of Islamic learning. This mosque serves Tottenham’s diverse Muslim community. It welcomes people of all backgrounds.
Masjid Ayesha took its momentous step in April 2006. It rebranded itself from Tottenham Mosque. The renaming coincided with a rebuilding program. The goal was to meet the needs of the growing community. The aim was to provide twenty-first-century services to the Muslim community. The Islamic Community Centre and Masjid Ayesha aim to provide a living space for Muslims. They can worship and express themselves there.
Sheikh Abdul Mohymen was the mosque’s imam for over 30 years. He said the mosque was named after Ayesha. She was one of the greatest women in Muslim history. She was Prophet Muhammad’s beloved wife. The Prophet Muhammad passed away in her arms. Ayesha exemplified youthful dynamism. She became a leading scholar. Many sought her wisdom.
Looking to her for inspiration the mosque hopes to embody her qualities. Women should be leading members. Young people should have space to grow. The mosque should be a beacon of Islamic learning. It should transmit the love of the Creator and humanity.
Established in 1982 Masjid Ayesha hosts five daily prayers. It also hosts Jummah prayers on Fridays. Major Islamic events are also held here. It conducts daily Quran classes. Religious counselling sessions are available for all. The mosque is the largest part of the Islamic Community Centre. It serves the social and welfare needs of the community.
The Islamic Community Centre was established through hard work. Community members showed devotion. Activities began in a residential house. They later moved to the present address. The Haringey council supported the move. The ICC gained charity status on June 24 1992.
Initially the ICC served mainly the Asian community. As more people settled there services were structured. The ICC diversified its services. It provided advice on education and training. Courses included English for speakers of other languages. They also offered help with job searches.
The ICC has provided educational support to young people. Core subjects include Maths Science and English. Courses in Arabic and the Quran are also provided. Over time the ICC has expanded its services. It now serves other ethnic groups. These include Africans Arabs and African-Caribbeans.
The organization operates on democratic principles. Women have representation at the decision-making level. The center is committed to making life productive. It involves young people in creative work. This helps them grow as responsible citizens. Officers are accountable to the members.
Shaykh Khidir Hussain is a graduate of Al-Azhar University in Egypt. He specializes in Fiqh. He is a prominent figure in the British Muslim community. He appears regularly on Eman Channel’s show Ask Eman.
Masjid Ayesha can accommodate up to 300 people. The mosque also provides prayer times. These times include Fajr Zuhr Asr Maghrib and Isha. It helps Muslims stay punctual in their prayers. The Masjid Ayesha app helps calculate Zakat. It helps Muslims fulfill their religious obligations.
