“Robert Reid Kalley,” the name hangs in the air. This name is significant to the story of Igreja Evangélica Congregacional.

Let’s delve into the Igreja Evangélica Congregacional, a place with roots stretching back to the 19th century. It is a testament to faith and community. The story of this church is intertwined with the broader history of Protestantism in Brazil.

Robert Reid Kalley, a Scottish physician and missionary, played a pivotal role. He and his wife Sarah Poulton Kalley arrived in Brazil in 1855. In 1858, they founded the Igreja Evangélica Fluminense. It was the first Brazilian Protestant congregation to worship in Portuguese. From this congregation sprang forth many missionaries to spread the word.

Kalley’s work in Brazil spanned over two decades. He left a lasting legacy extending beyond the church walls. He advocated for civil marriage and public cemeteries for non-Catholics. He also fought for religious freedom. These efforts resonate even today. Kalley even composed hymns used by various denominations.

After Kalley returned to Scotland, João Manoel Gonçalves dos Santos succeeded him. He created a summary of Christian doctrines known as the “Breve Exposição das Doutrinas Fundamentais do Cristianismo”. This became a core text.

In 1913, the União das Igrejas Evangélicas Indenominacionais emerged. It later became known as Congregacionais. In 1942, the União das Igrejas Congregacionais e Cristãs do Brasil was formed. This lasted until 1968. Then, in 1969, it was renamed União das Igrejas Evangélicas Congregacionais do Brasil. Its headquarters are here in Rio de Janeiro.

The Igreja Evangélica Congregacional do Brasil teaches doctrines based on the Breve Exposição. They practice adult baptism by sprinkling. The church observes Holy Communion in a memorialistic way. Pastors, elders, and deacons form its ecclesiastical body. There are also missionaries and evangelists.

Departments within the Igreja Evangélica Congregacional focus on evangelism, missions, and theological education. Other groups include unions for teens, young adults and men. There is also a women’s auxiliary union. These various groups and departments support the church’s activities.

The Igreja Evangélica Congregacional has spread across Brazil. It stands as one of the oldest denominations in the country. It represents a vibrant chapter in Brazil’s religious history. It continues to be a place of community.

Today the Igreja Evangélica Congregacional continues its mission. It provides services and fosters community. It welcomes all who seek faith and fellowship. Its history reminds us of the enduring power. It shows how faith can shape lives. The Igreja Evangélica Congregacional remains a testament to faith’s strength.
