Did you know that New Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church’s story began on August 17 1955? That’s when Reverend Elijah Sercye and 18 dedicated members established this church. They chose the name New Mount Sinai in reference to the biblical Mount Sinai where God revealed His laws to Moses. This powerful symbol perfectly reflects the church’s commitment to faith and its mission.
New Mount Sinai Missionary Baptist Church wasn’t always located at 310 North Laramie Avenue. Initially the congregation worshipped at 3642 West Roosevelt Road. Then in 1969 they moved to their current location a testament to their growth and God’s blessings. Think about the countless prayers the walls of this building have witnessed over the years. Reverend Elijah Sercye led the church for many years. His unwavering dedication and service left an indelible mark on the congregation. After his passing in 1983 Reverend Willie L Sercye continued his legacy. Reverend Willie L Sercye’s leadership further strengthened the church. His work lasted until his death in 1988. Subsequently Reverend David Spencer Sr. took over in 1988. His faithful service lasted until 1998. In 2000 Reverend Woodard Williams took the reins. He developed over 20 ministries during his 24 years of service. Finally in 2024 Reverend Terry Moore was called to lead the church.
The Illinois Baptist District Association is more than just a group of churches. It’s a family supporting each other. This shows the connection between New Mount Sinai and other Chicago churches. The association works to spread the gospel throughout the Chicagoland area and Illinois. Its members journey together experiencing both the joys and challenges of their shared faith.
