“Go Dukes!” echoes across this sprawling campus. That’s right, we’re standing before York Community High School, a place brimming with history, talent, and a whole lot of school spirit. York Community High School wasn’t always this grand. Founded in 1918, the original building served as both a high school and a grammar school. After a fire destroyed the building in 1917, York rose from the ashes, opening its doors to a new generation of learners. Over the decades, York Community High School expanded, adding floors, facilities, and even a swimming pool! In 2002, the school underwent a major transformation with a brand new building, boasting state-of-the-art classrooms, a sprawling fieldhouse, and dedicated areas for academics and the arts. And speaking of arts, York Community High School has a vibrant music scene. With multiple orchestras, bands, and choirs, as well as jazz ensembles and a-cappella groups, there’s a place for every musical talent. Their drama department even snagged the “Best Production” award at the Illinois High School Musical Theater Awards for their performance of “West Side Story.” Let’s not forget about York’s athletic legacy. Home to the Dukes, York boasts an impressive 28 state championships in men’s cross country, led by legendary coach Joe Newton. In 1993, their baseball team swung their way to a state title, a testament to their dedication and team spirit. Today, York Community High School stands as a testament to the power of education and community. It’s a place where traditions are honored, talents are nurtured, and future leaders are forged.
