What if I told you this neighborhood was named after flowers? Gardênia Azul. It is a place near Barra da Tijuca in Rio de Janeiro. Gardênia Azul is a lower-middle-class neighborhood. It sits in the Baixada de Jacarepaguá.
Gardênia Azul has a rich history. It includes the old Engenho D’Água Farm. This farm dates back to colonial Brazil. IPHAN protects it. The neighborhood also features the start of the Linha Amarela expressway.
Many houses and small apartments make up Gardênia Azul. These homes are common in the communities here. Its location is a big draw. It is close to the Linha Amarela. It is also near Barra and Recreio. Many residents find work in these areas.
Gardênia Azul borders Anil Freguesia and Cidade de Deus. Vila Nova Esperança is a community in Gardênia Azul. It began in the early 1990s. The area was once an orange grove. Antônio Escalda owned it.
Escalda’s descendants fought to reclaim the land. It had been seized due to unpaid taxes. During this time invasions occurred. Authorities did not intervene. The Canal do Anil also expanded. It grew from an old fishing community. Some residents still fish today.
Over the past 20 years the community has grown. Real estate speculation in central areas caused this. Poorer populations migrated here. Today there are over 500 homes. Small businesses thrive. Some residents have lived here for over 40 years.
In 2007 the southern part of the community faced challenges. It is near Barra da Tijuca and the Pan-American Village. This area became a target for real estate speculation. The city government tried to remove houses. They claimed it was a high-risk area. Municipal Guards and Military Police were involved. They lacked a judicial order. Some houses were demolished on August 1st. Residents resisted. Social movements supported them. Further demolitions have not occurred since then.
Comunidade Novo Rio started in 2001. Marco Aurélio França Moreira founded it. He was a community leader known as “Marcão”. He was murdered on January 14 2009.
The Espaço Hall event venue is also in Gardênia Azul. It is located on Avenida Ayrton Senna.
José Padilha Coimbra owned much land in the 1950s. His property was between the Engenho D’Água and Capão roads. His house was surrounded by gardens. Gardênias and vitória-régias plants grew there. In 1953 Padilha divided his land. He named the areas after his favorite plants. Vitórias-Régia was near Estrada Engenho D’Água. Gardênia Azul was at the end of Estrada do Capão.
The neighborhood we see today took shape in the 1960s. It happened under Governor Negrão de Lima. It faces the Estrada do Capão.
