Wasn’t it remarkable how a small Bible study group blossomed into a thriving church? That’s the story of Christian Unity Baptist Church. Right here on Connecticut Street stands a stately building. It’s far from the humble beginnings in someone’s home. Reverend Jerry and Gwendolyn Protho started it all. They began with just 43 people attending their Sunday Bible studies. That number exploded. They quickly outgrew their space.

The Christian Unity Baptist Church’s journey is one of remarkable growth. From those early days it quickly moved to a larger location. It was in 2007 they moved into the former Davis Seafood building. The church’s rapid expansion led Reverend Protho to obtain a Federal Identification Number. This allowed them to officially become a church in May 2008.

Before their current building the congregation met in several places. They briefly gathered at Greater St. Stevens Baptist Church. They also met at the House of Praise and Be Car Diamond Center. Finally in May 2009 Christian Unity Baptist Church found its permanent home at 2019 Connecticut Street.

Christian Unity Baptist Church is more than just a place of worship. It’s deeply rooted in the community. They’ve sponsored annual neighborhood cleanups. Every summer they give back-to-school giveaways. These include book bags school uniforms and school supplies. The church was also part of the One Church One School program.

Their prison ministry provides support for inmates. They correspond with them offering friendship and encouragement. After release some former inmates have become dedicated members of the church. Reverend Protho said the most rewarding aspect is sharing the word of God and teaching Christian conduct. He emphasized helping people during their most challenging times.

The church’s ninth anniversary theme was Matthew 16:16. It speaks of God’s protection over his church. This is a testament to the faith and dedication that built Christian Unity Baptist Church. It’s a testament to a small group growing into a strong community pillar. So next time you pass by remember this incredible story of faith and growth.
