Is this merely a chapel or a testament to enduring love? Prepare to be captivated by the poignant tale of Lumley Chapel. Right here in the tranquil churchyard of St. Dunstan’s Church rests this architectural gem. Lumley Chapel is not just an architectural marvel. It’s a monument to a love story that even death couldn’t diminish. This chapel, the oldest surviving building in the London Borough of Sutton, started its life as St. Dunstan’s Church, built sometime after 1018. The plot thickens in the 16th century when John Lumley, 1st Baron Lumley, enters the picture. He inherited the magnificent Nonsuch Palace nearby, a testament to his wealth and status. However, his heart yearned for something more. When his beloved wife, Lady Jane Fitzalan, died in 1578, John transformed St. Dunstan’s Church into a shrine of remembrance. Lumley Chapel became the final resting place for Lady Jane, her tomb adorned with family crests and touching depictions of their three children praying in the chapel of Nonsuch Palace. John’s love didn’t end there. When he died in 1609, he was laid to rest beside Jane. He had ensured his second wife, Elizabeth Darcy, would join them in eternity upon her death in 1617. Today, their alabaster and marble monuments stand as a testament to John Lumley’s undying devotion. Lumley Chapel is a whisper from the past, a love story etched in stone and bathed in the soft glow of history. Take a moment to appreciate these exquisite tombs. Let the grandeur of the past wash over you before we venture to our next destination.
