What secrets does a silent giant hold? Right here, in the heart of Malling, stands the Malling Vandtårn. It’s a structure that has witnessed the changing tides of time. This water tower, affectionately dubbed “Jacobs Tårn”, is more than just bricks and mortar. It’s a landmark with a story to tell. Built in 1922, Malling Vandtårn provided water for about 150 households. Imagine the hustle and bustle of those days, the clatter of buckets, and the murmur of relief as families accessed clean water thanks to this 12-meter sentinel. The tower played this vital role until 1958. After it was decommissioned, there were talks of demolishing it. The cost of protecting nearby windows from shattering during the demolition proved too high. A staggering 260,000 kroner! Thankfully, this exorbitant price tag saved the tower from destruction. In 1983, a colorful character named Jacob Haugaard, a comedian and later a Member of Parliament, bought the property. Malling Vandtårn found a new lease on life, becoming a quirky home and even a makeshift TV studio in the early 1990s for Haugaard’s show. Today, the tower stands as a silent testament to Malling’s past, whispering tales of progress, community, and a touch of eccentricity.
