1966. A cauldron of excitement brewed in Mexico City. A new giant was awakening, the Estadio Azteca. Can you imagine the anticipation? The Estadio Azteca, a stadium built for legends, opened its gates for a friendly match between Club América and Torino F.C. This wasn’t just any stadium. The Estadio Azteca was a symbol of Mexico’s ambition, a concrete testament to its love for the beautiful game. It was the “Colossus of Santa Úrsula,” a behemoth capable of holding over 100,000 roaring fans. The first goal scored in this magnificent arena was by Brazilian Arlindo Dos Santos, followed by another by his compatriot, José Alves. Though the match ended in a 2-2 draw, it marked the beginning of the Estadio Azteca’s storied journey. Just a few days later, the stadium lights blazed for the first night game, a clash between Valencia C.F. and Necaxa. Honduran José Cardona scored the first goal under the electric sky. The Estadio Azteca wasn’t just a stadium; it was a stage for history. In 1970, it hosted the FIFA World Cup Final, a moment of national pride. But it was the semi-final, the “Game of the Century” between Italy and West Germany, that truly etched itself into the stadium’s soul. Five goals in extra time, a dislocated shoulder for Franz Beckenbauer, and an Italian victory – this match became legendary. The Estadio Azteca witnessed greatness again in 1986. Diego Maradona, a name synonymous with football magic, graced the pitch. Here, he scored the infamous “Hand of God” goal and, just minutes later, the “Goal of the Century,” dribbling past five English defenders. The Estadio Azteca saw Maradona lift the World Cup trophy, cementing its place in football history. Today, the Estadio Azteca is home to the Mexican national team, El Tri, and Club América. It continues to host NFL games, concerts, and even religious events. It has seen renovations, including new suites, jumbotrons, and a state-of-the-art camera system. But the heart of the Estadio Azteca remains unchanged. It is a place where legends are made, where the roar of the crowd echoes the passion of a nation, and where the spirit of football lives on.
