Since 1958, this family-owned farm has produced premium freshwater trout and salmon. For over 40 years, the MacRae family has run this farm. It’s located at the foot of Buxton’s Cathedral Mountain Ranges in the Murrindindi Shire. A ninety-minute drive from Melbourne’s CBD, this farm offers a fun day out.
At Buxton Trout & Salmon Farm, you can catch your own fresh food. Imagine the thrill of reeling in a rainbow trout or Atlantic salmon. Afterwards, relax by the Stevensons River with your friends and family. The farm is set in a picturesque natural bush setting. Gum trees fringe the open, grassy area around the ponds. Each pond is clearly marked with the type of fish. The price per kilo varies depending on the fish. If you’re feeling adventurous, try the Challenge pond. It holds rainbow trout weighing 0.5 to 3 kg each.
Keep in mind that you must keep any fish you catch. The staff will clean your fish. Then you can use the undercover BBQ area to cook your catch.
Buxton Trout & Salmon Farm hatches all its own fish. There are zero food miles throughout the entire process. It doesn’t get any fresher than this.
Don’t miss the Mountain Ash wood-fired smoked trout. The MacRae family learned the time-honored smoking methods from a local Dutchman in the seventies. The process involves a twelve-hour brine. Then comes a slow five-hour smoke using zero electricity. Purpose-built smokers ensure the best flavor. It was even featured on Masterchef.
The Buxton Trout Farm suffered during the Black Saturday bushfires in 2009. The fires claimed many lives and devastated nearby villages. Mitch MacRae, family, and friends worked hard to save the farm and house. Sadly, forty tons of fish were lost. Fencing, part of the hatchery, and some sheds also perished. But with the help of locals, customers, and fisheries groups, Buxton Trout Farm got back up and running.
