Can you imagine a small piece of land in the bustling city center of Paris? You are standing right in front of Château de Bois-Préau. It is a castle that boasts a sprawling 17-hectare English garden. The Château de Bois-Préau may seem unassuming at first glance. But it holds a captivating history intertwined with powerful figures like Empress Josephine. Originally, this land belonged to the wealthy Abbey of St. Denis. In 1696, it was acquired by the Leonard family, renowned printers and booksellers to the King. They built a residence here between 1697 and 1700, adorning the grounds with beautiful gardens and water features. The estate changed hands several times. But it was Empress Josephine, wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, who became captivated by its charm. She longed to add Château de Bois-Préau to her nearby Malmaison estate. But the then-owner, Anne-Marie Julien, steadfastly refused to sell. It was only upon Anne-Marie’s death in 1808 that Josephine could finally purchase the property. Josephine used Château de Bois-Préau to house her staff and store the overflow from her extensive library at Malmaison. She even commissioned renovations to the gardens. After her death in 1814, the estate passed through various owners, each leaving their mark on its history. Today, the Château de Bois-Préau stands as a testament to its rich past. While the castle itself is currently under renovation, its park remains open. It offers a tranquil escape from the city’s clamor. As you stroll through its pathways, imagine the figures who once graced this very ground. Picture Empress Josephine taking in the fresh air. She is discussing literature with her esteemed guests. The Château de Bois-Préau is a hidden gem. It whispers tales of ambition, artistry, and the enduring allure of nature amidst the urban sprawl.
