What if I told you that the Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas began as a humble school of bacteriology? It has blossomed into a leading institution for biological sciences.
The Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas is more than just a school. It is a cornerstone of Mexican scientific education. Founded on January 28 1934 the Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas started as the Escuela Nacional de Bacteriología. Its initial focus was on training experts in health, chemical biology, environment and bioengineering.
Located in the Unidad Profesional Lázaro Cárdenas it is commonly known as Casco de Santo Tomás. The Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas shares this space with other prominent schools. These include the Escuela Superior de Comercio y Administración, the Escuela Superior de Medicina, the Escuela Superior de Economía and the Escuela Superior de Enfermería y Obstetricia. The Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas also has a location in the Unidad Profesional Adolfo López Mateos.
Initially the Escuela Nacional de Bacteriología offered only a three-year program in bacteriology. Dr Leopoldo Ancona Hernández was its first director. In 1936 the school considered adding a program in Chemical Criminology. This led to a plan to expand the school’s offerings. Bacteriology was linked with fermentation processes. In 1937 it was renamed Escuela de Bacteriología Parasitología y Fermentaciones.
By 1938 the school had expanded its curriculum. New careers were created. These included Botany Zoology Anthropology Hydrobiology Entomology Chemical Bacteriology and Parasitology Rural Medicine Chemical Criminology and Dietitian Hygienist. In recognition of technological advances the school was renamed Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas. This name remains today.
The Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas boasts an impressive herbarium. Professor Maximino Martínez started it in 1943. Initially used for teaching by 1952 it became a resource for botanical research. The acronym ENCB was registered internationally in 1966. The herbarium now includes collections of vascular plants algae fungi and bryophytes. Notably the algae and fungi collections were considered the largest in Latin America in 2016. The herbarium is open to researchers outside the institution promoting biological research.
The Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas offers a wide range of undergraduate programs. These include Biology Biochemical Engineering Environmental Systems Engineering Chemical Bacteriology Parasitology and Industrial Pharmaceutical Chemistry. Postgraduate studies cover biological aspects of health sciences chemistry food science environmental science and technology.
Many distinguished individuals have graduated from the Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas. Jerzy Rzedowski Rotter a renowned biologist and botanist was honored as Botanist of the Millennium. Gastón Guzmán Huerta a biologist mycologist and ethnobiologist was a pioneer in the study of hallucinogenic mushrooms. Laura Huerta Múzquiz a biologist and expert in algae was a pioneer in phycology in Mexico.
