Step into Dulwich Park a verdant escape in South London. This park is more than just grass and trees. It’s a carefully crafted landscape with a rich history.

Dulwich Park spans over 30 hectares which equals about 76 acres. It was created from former farmland and meadows. The Metropolitan Board of Works initiated the park’s creation. Charles Barry Junior designed the initial layout. Lt Col JJ Sexby later refined it. Sexby also designed Battersea Park and parts of Southwark Parks. Lord Rosebery officially opened Dulwich Park in 1890.

Between 2004 and 2006 Dulwich Park underwent a restoration. This returned the park to its original Victorian design. The Heritage Lottery Fund provided a grant for this project. Today Dulwich Park is Grade II listed on the Register of Historic Parks and Gardens. This recognizes its special historic interest.

Notice the gates and lodges that surround Dulwich Park. They are also Grade II listed. This includes the park lodges by the Old College and Rosebery gates. The Queen Mary, Court Lane, Rosebery and Old College gates are also included.

Dulwich Park offers a variety of activities. There is a café for refreshments. You can rent a boat on the boating lake. Various sporting facilities are available too. Even recumbent bicycles are available for hire.

Cars have been restricted in Dulwich Park since 2003. Only disabled badge holders are allowed. There is a fee-paying car park near the College Road entrance.

Dulwich Park is home to Dulwich Park Runners a local running club. Every Saturday a Parkrun event takes place. An active bowling club has operated here since 1900. It is open every summer from April to September.

Queen Mary regularly visited Dulwich Park. She loved the American Garden with its rhododendrons. They bloom spectacularly in May. One of the park gates is named after her.

Dulwich Park began as farmland and meadows known as “five fields”. Some of the ancient boundary oaks still stand today.

Before you leave Dulwich Park take a moment to appreciate its blend of history recreation and natural beauty. It is a testament to Victorian design and community enjoyment. Dulwich Park continues to be a treasured green space for all.
