Manguinhos

Nestled between the railway line and Guanabara Bay, Manguinhos holds a story of science, resilience, and community. Manguinhos began as a solution. In 1900, the bubonic plague threatened Rio de Janeiro. City officials chose the then-remote Manguinhos Farm to establish the Federal Serum Therapy Institute. Its mission was to produce the life-saving serums and vaccines needed to combat the deadly disease. Chosen for its elevation and access to both land and sea, Manguinhos became a sanctuary of hope in a time of fear. The young bacteriologist, Oswaldo Cruz, fresh from the Pasteur Institute in Paris, was tasked with leading this vital work. His vision transformed Manguinhos into more than just a production facility. He cultivated it into a hub of scientific advancement, focused on research and public health. In 1908, in recognition of Cruz’s significant contributions to eradicating yellow fever in Rio, the institute was renamed the Instituto Oswaldo Cruz (IOC). This was a testament to the impactful work being done in Manguinhos. The IOC’s influence extended far beyond the city. Early expeditions ventured into the Brazilian backlands to study diseases affecting rural communities. This initiative was not without its complexities. It brought to light the disparities between the “civilized” coastal cities and the often-overlooked populations of the interior. It stirred a national conversation about social responsibility and equity. Over the years, Manguinhos continued to evolve. The institute expanded, and new buildings rose alongside the original Moorish Pavilion, a striking structure inspired by the Alhambra in Granada. This architectural gem, nicknamed the “Fiocruz Castle,” became a symbol of Manguinhos and its dedication to scientific pursuit. Manguinhos also became home to a vibrant community garden, the largest in Latin America. This garden, part of the Hortas Cariocas project, has transformed a former rubbish dump into a source of fresh, organic food and a place of hope for residents of the surrounding favelas. It is a testament to the community’s resilience and their commitment to building a better future. The story of Manguinhos is a blend of science, architecture, and community spirit. It is a story of how a place initially designed to address a crisis grew to become a symbol of hope, innovation, and positive change in Rio de Janeiro.
