Founded in 1868 Community First Baptist Church stands proudly in Dallas. Eleven founding members first convened in a Masonic Hall. They later purchased their first building on Akard Street. The cornerstone of the current sanctuary was laid in 1891. Community First Baptist Church wasn’t just a place of worship. It became a vital part of the Dallas community. It established numerous ministries. First Baptist Academy and Criswell College championed Christian education. KCBI a Christian radio station started in the mid-1970s is still broadcasting today. The church’s influence extended far beyond Dallas. In 2013 Senator Ted Cruz spoke at the church praising its strong leadership. This powerful church underwent significant expansion in 2013. A 3000-seat Worship Center was built. The renovation cost a staggering $130 million. This made it the most expensive Protestant building project in modern history. The church’s growth continued. In 2019 another $35 million expansion was announced. This included expanding the Horner Family Center and adding a new parking garage. The church’s facilities were impressive. They included a large skywalk and a computer-synchronized water fountain. Sadly in 2024 a devastating fire partially collapsed the historic sanctuary. No one was injured. Community First Baptist Church however remains a beacon of faith in Dallas. It has weathered challenges and continues to serve its community and beyond. Its story is one of resilience faith and remarkable growth.
