“A school imbued with such history,” the old woman murmured, her eyes fixed on the building before us. Standing here, before the gates of the Hiroshima City Yukiminami Elementary School, you might not realize you’re looking at 150 years of history. Founded in 1874 in a collection of villages, it has witnessed generations pass through its halls. It has seen the name change from Gokoku Island Normal School to Yukiminami Elementary School. But perhaps most poignantly, it has stood strong through changing times, including the period following the devastating atomic bombing of Hiroshima. Today, Yukiminami Elementary School continues its legacy. It provides a safe and nurturing space for children, echoing its motto: “Let’s grow up to be healthy, kind and thoughtful.” However, like the echoes of footsteps in an empty hallway, its future hangs in the balance. Due to changing demographics and declining enrollment, the school is scheduled for closure in the next few years. Let us cherish the stories etched in these walls and remember the enduring spirit of Yukiminami Elementary School.
