The Warrandyte Historical Society was established in 1976. A group of dedicated volunteers wanted to preserve the area’s unique history. Their work continues to this day right here at the Warrandyte Historical Society.
Warrandyte itself boasts a fascinating story. It sits on the Yarra River about 35 km from Melbourne. The town enjoys a special place in Victoria’s cultural and artistic history.
In 1851, gold was first officially discovered in Victoria near here. Warrandyte quickly transformed into a lively township. Miners arrived. They were soon joined by orchardists and farmers.
Around 1900, artists began flocking to Warrandyte. The beautiful river valley became a haven for painters. Clara Southern was a well-known artist who resided here. Her presence attracted other artistic people.
The area’s tranquil scenery drew day trippers and holidaymakers. Later, a pottery tradition developed, gaining recognition throughout Australia. The formation of Warrandyte State Park in 1975 further enhanced its reputation.

Our museum is located in the old Warrandyte Post Office. It operated from 1876 to 1972. After it was left empty, fire severely damaged it. From 1985 to 1988, it was restored and became the Society’s home.
One room is dedicated to the gold discovery and its impact on the town. Another room tells the story of the Wurundjeri people. It explains their connection to this land. Special exhibits showcase Warrandyte to residents and visitors.
The Warrandyte Historical Society is run by a dedicated committee. They are affiliated with the Whitehorse Manningham Heritage Network. They also work with Picture Victoria.
