Once the home of knights’ wives and daughters, the Convento de Santos-o-Novo stands before us. Built in the early 17th century during the reign of Filipe II, it was intended for the Comendadeiras of the Order of Saint James. These women came from the Convent of Santos-o-Velho. It was dedicated to the 4th Century Saint Martyrs of Lisbon.

Now, let’s delve into the history of this imposing structure. King João II ordered a monastery to be erected here in 1470. The Convento de Santos-o-Novo we see today arose from that foundation. Baltazar Álvares and Mateus do Couto were its original architects. They began their work in 1606 and 1617.

The convent reflects the architectural styles of Mannerism and Baroque. However the 1755 earthquake caused significant damage. Subsequent restoration efforts helped to rebuild it. The initial project was never fully completed.

After the extinction of religious orders in 1834, the convent’s purpose shifted. In 1910, it became a primary school. Later, the Instituto Sidónio Pais occupied the space. Currently, the Misericórdia de Lisboa manages it as a shelter.

The church within Convento de Santos-o-Novo holds relics of the Martyrs. It showcases rich Baroque art. Polychrome marbles, tiles depicting historical episodes, and gilded wood carvings adorn the space. Statues of King João V add to the grandeur.

The cloister is the largest in Lisbon. Chapels of Our Lady of the Incarnation and Senhor dos Passos are located within the cloister. These chapels feature detailed wood carvings, tiles, paintings, and sculptures. An oratory dedicated to the Queen is also found here.

Note that photography is not allowed inside the Convento de Santos-o-Novo. This rule helps preserve the delicate artwork and maintain a reverent atmosphere. The tile panels narrate the life of the Saint Martyrs.

The Convento de Santos-o-Novo has been recognized as a Building of Public Interest. This classification includes the church, cloister, and surrounding gardens. It acknowledges the historical and cultural importance of the entire convent complex.
