How did a simple land purchase transform into a beloved Buenos Aires plaza? Welcome to Plaza General Benito Nazar in the vibrant Villa Crespo neighborhood. This isn’t just any green space. It’s a testament to a family’s generosity and a community’s enduring spirit.

In 1849 Benito Nazar and his wife Lucida Yaniz bought 13 square blocks of land for 25000 pesos. It was a significant investment in what was then a developing area. Their daughter Ines Nazar Yañiz later donated a portion of this land to the city. This generous act laid the foundation for Plaza General Benito Nazar. It wasn’t an immediate transformation. The land sat for some time before its true purpose was realised.

Initially there were plans to use the plaza as a sports field. Local children would play football there. This was a dream of the Sociedad de Fomento General Benito Nazar located opposite the plaza. This was to be a space for the children of the society members. The family’s legacy was to continue to be cherished.

The official planning began in 1928. The Direccion de Plazas y Paseos Publicos stepped in. They wanted to design a proper urban plaza not just a sports field. The Association Vecinal and Biblioteca Popular General Benito Nazar were also involved. They wanted to keep the General Benito Nazar’s memory alive.

The plaza finally opened to the public in 1929. Mayor Jose Luis Cantilo officiated at the inauguration. This day marked the beginning of a new chapter for Villa Crespo. A symbol of community pride stood ready for generations to enjoy. It became a key location for celebrations particularly for the neighbourhood’s birthday. The central flagpole is the focus point for these lively occasions. A lasting legacy of the Nazar family. Their contribution is woven into the very fabric of Villa Crespo. So next time you pass through this neighbourhood remember its history. The plaza is a symbol of unity and shared history.
