Before us stands Prestongrange House, a grand testament to Scotland’s rich history. This mansion, with its impressive baronial style, seems to whisper tales of bygone eras. Imagine the Ker family living here in the 16th century, their days punctuated by the ever-present threat of border skirmishes. Their era ended in 1609 when the house passed to the Morrison family, a mark of the changing tides of power in Scotland. Though perhaps less dramatic than the Ker’s, the Morrison family also left their mark, notably with a painted ceiling dated 1581, a masterpiece of the Scottish Renaissance. The Morrison era was followed by the Grant-Sutties, whose lineage, spanning over a century, continued to shape the house’s destiny. For in their time, the house was remodelled and expanded by none other than the renowned architect William Henry Playfair, adding the iconic square towers. However, Prestongrange has seen more than just noble families. In 1925, with the Grant-Sutties bowing out, the Royal Musselburgh Golf Club took over, transforming the house into its clubhouse. Today, the golfers tee off under the watchful gaze of the towers, a reminder of the house’s diverse past. Prestongrange stands as a living testament to the changing landscape of Scotland, where grand houses have been transformed into new lives, serving new generations.
